If someone tells you that you can’t or shouldn’t perform Ashiatsu massage on a client who is lighter than you, then I can say with confidence that they DO NOT KNOW HOW TO PERFORM ASHIATSU OPTIMALLY or HOW TO CONTROL THEIR PRESSURE PROPERLY.
Ashiatsu IS NOT only for deep tissue massage. You can do Swedish style massage with Ashiatsu too! As your Ashiatsu skills progress you’ll develop the ability to control the pressure you’re applying with ease. With Ashiatsu you’ll not only be able to apply the deepest pressure you possibly can, but you’ll also be able to apply pressure as light as a feather when wanted. In fact, Ashiatsu is just as amazing for Swedish Massage as it is for deep tissue massage.
A great benefit to Ashiatsu Swedish Massage is that the pressure you apply feels lighter than it actually is because the pressure is spread over the larger surface area of the foot. So when you perform Ashiatsu Swedish Massage on a client they are receiving deeper pressure and more muscle tension relief than it feels like for them. They get off your table feeling far more relaxed than they ever would from a traditional Swedish Massage using the upper limbs.
No matter your weight you can learn to control the amount of pressure you apply and work on anyone no matter their body weight in comparison to yours. I’ve performed Ashiatsu on clients who weigh as much as 80 pounds less than me and that includes advanced Ashiatsu massage strokes. I will say that I don’t do advanced Ashiatsu with most of my clients and when I do, I only do advanced Ashiatsu massage strokes that will be beneficial for them.
